The GFOSS is a non-profit organisation, which was founded in 2008 by 25 Greek Universities, Research Centres, Higher Technological Education Institutes (ATEI) and the Greek Research and Technology Network (GRNET). Our major goal is to promote the use and development of FOSS for the Greek sectors of Education, Public Administration, and Business. We, therefore, aspire to become a knowledge hub and a platform for dialogue about Free Software and the benefits of its use. The majority of Greek Universities, Research Centres and ATEI are members of the GFOSS, while the Greek community of FOSS users and developers plays a major role in the implementation of our actions, through its cooperation and active participation. Our planned initiatives include: - Raising public awareness about the benefits of using and developing FOSS. - Providing reliable and timely information about FOSS issues, both in Greece and internationally. - Fostering cooperation and equal participation for all stakeholders that are directly or indirectly involved in the promotion and development of FOSS in Greece, such as the community of Greek FOSS developers and the entrepreneurs interested in FOSS. - Establishing a number of FOSS promotion centres in Greece. (Their tasks will include organising training seminars, cataloguing FOSS needs in various business sectors, and indexing all Greek institutions and organisations with an active interest in FOSS.) - Coordinating the efforts of the Greek groups of volunteer FOSS programmers, enabling them to form the backbone of Greek FOSS development and implementation. - Supporting the development and promotion of FOSS-based business models, and providing businesses with information on FOSS adoption and migration. - Offering technical support for FOSS applications. In particular, establishing a help-desk for FOSS users and groups, supporting software localization, developing a glossary, and contributing to the development of applications for which there is clear demand in Greece. Achieving our targets will rely on the close cooperation of the following parties: - the Greek community of FOSS users and developers, - laboratories using and developing free software in Greek Universities, ATEI, and research centres, - interested parties/potential users (public administration, educational institutions, businesses), - ICT companies, which will establish an adequate base of business models for FOSS support and development.
